Mission

The mission of Keizer Elementary School’s Counseling Program is to support and empower all students to acquire the educational, occupational, and personal/social competencies necessary to become effective students, contributing citizens, productive workers, and lifelong learners; with graduation for all.

Counseling Services

The school counselors may meet weekly, monthly, or as needed with students in crisis, or whom may need skill building or support in identified areas.  These services may be requested by parents, students or their teacher.  It is important to note that this is not THERAPY even though it may be THERAPEUTIC in nature.  School counselors’ ultimate goal is to address any barriers to students’ accessing their education.  Efforts are made to keep these meetings brief and solution-focused, so that students can return to their academic work and tasks.  Counselors can help support parents with community mental health referrals using your family insurance resources as needed.

Guidance

*ALL students participate in bi-monthly classroom guidance provided by counselors.
Guidance is taught through Social/Emotional Learning times in classrooms.  Topics covered include: character traits/building, social/emotional skill building, understanding and responding to bullying, and college/career readiness. Further Guidance may also be requested in the classroom to support teacher instruction.  Counselors are also available to help support teachers in the instruction of all district's required Health curriculum.

Resources

The counselors at Keizer coordinate resources through our school’s Community School Outreach Coordinator (CSOC).  If you have a need for school supplies or clothing, communicate that need to your child’s teacher. Resources are given at discretion of the school.

Groups

*ALL STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN GROUP SERVICES

Group services at Keizer are vast and implemented by student need.  All students may participate in lunch groups, these may be facilitated on a regular or intermittent schedule based on teacher recommendation.  Lunch groups are based on friendship and communication skill building.

Some students are selected by teachers to participate in Social Skills/Friendship groups, these groups support the district’s Positive Behavior Incentive Systems model (PBIS).  If your student is selected to participate, you will be notified via a flyer reminder in which you may return to opt out your child, or you may contact your child’s teacher.  Groups are scheduled to have minimum impact on classroom instructional time.

*THIS INFORMATION SERVES AS NOTIFICATION ABOUT GROUP COUNSELING SERVICES AT KEIZER AND YOUR CHILD’S PARTICIPATION THERIN.  IF YOU WISH TO OPT YOUR CHILD OUT YOU MUST CONTACT YOUR CHILD’S TEACHER.
